Paper Mario: The Origami King

Paper Mario: The Origami King, the player controls a two dimensional paper version of Mario, and explore a liner open world designed to look like paper and cardboard. In these spaces, Mario can collect coins, which can be used to purchase items and other collectibles, which can be used in combat. Hidden toads are also scattered around, folded up into either origami or creased and crumpled. Mario can interact with non-playable characters, some of which will temporarily join the player's party and can aid Mario in combat or interact with certain obstacles in the overworld. In certain areas of the game, Mario can use an ability known as the "1000-Fold Arms technique," used to tear back parts of the paper environment to reveal secrets. Additionally, Mario is given a bag of confetti, which is used to fill holes in the environment.

A boss battle against the Earth Vellumental, with the boss in the center and Mario on the outside. The rings can be interacted with to create a path for Mario to follow. On the ground is additional arrow tiles, battle and magic circle tiles, and a 2x tile, which will double Mario's damage if stepped on.

The player fights enemies using a turn-based battle system. When Mario comes into contact with one or more enemies in the overworld, the game transitions to a battle screen. During battle, Mario stands at the center of a dartboard-shaped arena, which is divided into four ring-shaped sections with 12 radial slots, with each enemy occupying a different slot. During the player's turn and prior to attacking, he can slide the rings in horizontal or vertical directions to shift enemies around the arena, limited both by a timer and a set number of rotations, in order to group them such that as many enemies could be attacked at once. Once the player has finished shifting the enemies, he can then attack with a hammer, which targets enemies in a 2-by-2 section of the grid adjacent to the center; or with boots, which target a single line of enemies. The player could also instead use various items that can attack enemies with varying power, or heal the player's heart points. The player is awarded additional attacks in a single turn if all enemies had been moved to the optimal solution. Any remaining enemies will then attack Mario before switching back to the player's turn. If the player wins the battle, he is awarded coins.
